3 Facts about Paper Towel that will alarm you!
You most likely agree that it is very common for people to store their fresh food in paper towel as well as use paper towel to absorb the fat after cooking bacon or fritters.
One of our core values is to empower people to make better, healthier choices for themselves. We have taken a few moments to put together a very quick note about using paper towel to wrap fresh food.
We are not sure if you are aware, but thought you might like to know, that fresh food quite often takes on the chemical residue from its surrounding, even in the fridge. This is quite worrying as most paper towel on the market contains toxic chemicals which can compromise a person’s health and/or the health of their family. Two main chemical found in most paper towels are Chlorine and Formaldehyde.
Chlorine is quite commonly used to make the paper towel white in colour. The by-products of using Chlorine for bleaching are toxins such as dioxin and furans, which are known to be extremely dangerous to the human body. The Energy Justice Network (ejnet.org) reports that The World Health Organization -- published their research into dioxins and furans and announced on February 14, 1997, that the most potent dioxin, 2,3,7,8-TCDD, is a now considered a Group 1 carcinogen, meaning that it's a known human carcinogen. These toxins accumulate in our bodies, creating dangerous health concerns, including cancer, hormonal disorders (dioxin is a hormone disruptor), immune system impairments, reduced fertility and birth defects. Dioxins are fat soluble and accumulate in the body over time creating a very dangerous situation, even in unborn babies because dioxins travel through the placenta.
Then there is Formaldehyde which is used “to improve the wet-strength and other “valued” characteristics of paper and paper products”. Formaldehyde is also a known carcinogen.
Also, just like thermal (receipt) paper, Paper Towel has been found to contain very high amounts of Bisphenol A (BPA), even paper towel made from recycled paper. BPA is also a hormone disruptor and if you want to know more abour food contact plastic click here.
If you using paper towel for your fresh food, you are consuming these toxic chemicals through your skin (the biggest organ of the human body) and your fresh food.
